Farnese – Stonemason Tools Supplier Melbourne
03 9829 2690
Designers and manufacturers of stone cutting and polishing machinery Farnese Australia was founded in 2000 by the Farnese family, whose members have decades of combined professional experience and expertise in both the global stone industry and the local stone machinery manufacturing industry. We are the only designer and manufacturer of stone cutting and polishing machinery in Australia, and our machines have found homes all over Australia, as well as New Zealand, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. Our range of machines caters to the diverse needs of the stone industry, and it includes bridge saws, edge polishing machines and slab lifting equipment. Our International headquarters is located at Ingleburn, on the southwestern edge of Australia. We also have an office and warehouse in Houston, Texas.
Customer input and feedback are of the utmost importance to our designs. The best example of this has been the extremely popular Mitre Saw. It was the first dedicated mitre saw on the market and is the most sold machine of its kind around the world today. This machine was designed as a direct need of many of our customers to be able to cut mitres on materials accurately and inexpensively. Most of our customers were having problems cutting mitres on the bridge saw. So a simple sketch was made on a laptop, and rough production costs worked out for what became our most popular seller. We have also manufactured many custom-made machines in the past for special purposes such as cutting fibre-cement panels, lightweight insulation panels and concrete blocks.
Farnese Australia started when 98 per cent of the equipment sold in Australia was European. A South Korean importer emerged on the scene, and then a few machines were imported from China. Nonetheless, we have kept growing each year. We believe that the principle reason for this growth is that Farnese is a designer and manufacturer of its products. Knowing our products entirely, including every technical detail, gives us an advantage over the opposition. We believe that technical knowledge and support are crucial attributes of a reliable and trusted supplier, and that is what we always aim to be. We are very optimistic about the future as we know that we have extremely competitive products and reliable service.
Farnese Australia has been changing considerably over the years. We have expanded our range of machinery from the production of bridge saws (we make 6 different types) to CNC machining centres, lifting equipment, multi and single head polishers, dust extraction units and water recycling equipment. We have our main office in Sydney, but we also have coverage across Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America. These partnerships have assured us that we give our customers local support and service. We are resolved to provide the best support in Australia and New Zealand.

Latham Australia – Stonemason Tools Supplier Melbourne

Stone Carving Chisels & Accessories
Latham’s range of European and English stonemason tools are designed for splitting, shaping and trimming stone. The tool range covers every type of use, from roughing out large sculptures or splitting boulders to create traditional stone walls.
The tool range is available in two types: for soft stone carving; and for carving both soft and hard stone (universal usage). Soft stones include marble, limestone, onyx, sandstone and slate. Hardstone types include granite, tracite, malamite and basalt.
Mallet Head chisels are normally used on softer stones with a high-density nylon mallet. Hammer Head chisels (sometimes known as Cup Head) are used on harder stones and should be used with a dummy mallet or lump hammer. All Latham’s stonemason tools pass a thorough inspection during various stages of manufacture as well as prior to shipment.
Tungsten Carbide Tipped Stone Cutting Tools
Latham’s stonecutting products include tungsten carbide tipped tools, which consist of tungsten carbide tips inserted into high carbon tool steels. Tungsten carbide tips out-perform regular heat-treated steel tools many times over and are the tool of choice for professional stonemasons and for any large stonemasonry project.
When using tungsten carbide tipped tools, it is important that they be used properly to prevent breakage of the tips. Breakage can occur if: the tool is not sharpened regularly; only the corner of the tip is used, the tool is used as a lever, is hit too hard; sharpened on a wheel or stone other than of green silicon carbide; or any method of cooling is used during or after grinding/sharpening.
Chisel and Mallet Product Range
Latham’s range includes a wide variety of chisels and mallets. For hard stones, Mallet Head masons chisels are ideal for general roughing out work. For letter cutting and sculpture carving, HammerHead chisels should be used with a dummy mallet or lump hammer. Pneumatic chisel heads are also available, including Claw (Tooth), Point, Bush Hammer Head, and Scutchcomb Holders.
For softer stones, Fishtail chisels facilitate carving and sculpture work where the carver is looking to prevent the tool from becoming wedged in the stone. Mallet Head chisels are suitable for letter cutting and sculpture and should be used in combination with a wooden mallet. Latham’s mallet range also includes Dummy Mallets, made from malleable iron in 450gms, 675gms, and 900gms weights and Nylon High-Density Mallets available in 75mm (410gm), 50mm ( 575gm), 125mm (1100gm), and 150mm (1500gm) sizings.
Other Stone Carving Tools and Accessories
All chisels are supplied pre-sharpened and do not need to be re-sharpened before use. However, sharpening stones are also available. When sharpening, a suitable green silicon carbide wheel only should be used. For fine honing, a Diamond Hand Whetstone or a green silicon carbide hand block should be used.
The tool range for carving stone also includes Pugs and Feathers for drill sizes 25mm or 300mm and Hammer Head Punches and Hammer Head Nickers for use with both hard or soft stones. The HammerHead Nickers is ideal for general roughing out work.
At no time do the manufacturers use faulty materials. All tools have to pass thorough inspections during the various stages of the manufacturing and once again before shipment. It is economically impossible to replace or repair broken tools free of charge, therefore it is in the best interest of the user to take great care in the use of the tools. Examine all tools before use relative to transit damage.
Stone tool products are only for distribution in Australia and the South Pacific Region.
Lathams is a third-generation family-owned business founded in the early 1950’s. Originally in the supply and manufacturing of materials handling, power transmission equipment, roller-chains, sprockets, we also designed and built special-purpose machinery.
In 1960 the company started to change the direction of its business by expanding the Latham product range specifically to cater for the needs of the terrazzo, marble, granite and stone industries. Inventing the Neoprene-X-Pension Loc Strip Control Joint System, manufacturing dividing strips, self-aligning mechanical flexible expansion joint covers, slip-resistant safety stair tread nosings and mall bars.
Latham further expanded its product range to include dirt control entry mats, architectural landscape grids and grates, loading dock bumpers, tactile indicator studs, wall protection systems, specialty terrazzo and stone cleaners/sealers, exporting to the USA, Britain, Europe, South East Asia, Asia, The Middle East and the Pacific Region. The name Latham is synonymous with quality. Latham products can be found in many prestigious buildings around the world, have won over 30 awards, including numerous Australian Design Awards and are recognised worldwide.
How to choose the best masonry tools?
Masonry work is one of those home improvement skills that few homeowners attempt to master. Drywall, electrical, plumbing, and painting get most of the do-it-yourself attention, while masonry is often hired out to skilled masons.
Yet do-it-yourself masonry work can be highly satisfying and creative. And aside from the pleasure of seeing a job well done, one of the great things about doing masonry work is that its tools and materials are basic, inexpensive, and easy to comprehend.
As befits a trade that has been in existence since the days of ancient Egypt, masonry work uses common items like crushed stone and limestone from the earth and simple metal shaping tools. Suppose you are interested in do-it-yourself masonry for fireplaces, walls, planters, or just about anything that uses brick or stone. In that case, you’ll want to invest in a basic set of masonry tools and materials.
Must-Have Masonry Hand Tools
First, let’s take a look at the most essential hand tools.
If you’re familiar with any single masonry hand tool, it is likely the iconic V-trowel.
Though it looks like a pie-serving utensil at first glance, this hand tool is used to pick up and spread mortar across the desired surface. Most trowels feature two tapered sides that allow users to meter out how much mortar they are delivering onto their work surface.
Your V-trowel will see lots of use, so it is worth your money to spend a little extra on durability. Stainless steel will often serve well for this purpose, as do trowels with reinforced joints and wood handles.
Also, be aware that there are many types of trowels available. While it may be tempting to get an extra-large trowel or a special-use trowel at this time, it is best to wait until a specific masonry job calls for those tools.
A masonry hammer is another must-have that cannot be substituted with a standard claw hammer. That’s because a masonry hammer’s head is shaped for use specifically in this domain of construction.
To that end, a masonry hammer’s head includes a square, flat end that can be used for pounding nails as well as a sharp, chisel-like end. As you might expect, the end is best used to chip off or split masonry materials like bricks.
Even if you pick up a masonry hammer (which includes a chisel on its head), you will still need to obtain a standalone chisel for your masonry toolbox. Specifically, you’ll want to pick up a blocking chisel that is capable of withstanding countless blows when used to split bricks and stones.
A blocking chisel that meets this standard will likely be made of thick stainless steel and measure about 8 inches in length.
There are also other types of chisels to choose from at this introductory stage. You may instead opt for a cold chisel, which is shorter than its blocking chisel counterpart. It also features a wider head, making it more able to split stones and bricks along an even line.
Here’s one masonry hand tool that far too many amateurs (and even some professional) masons forget to bring to a job site – a wire brush.
While this tool is simple to use and understand, it can make a major difference when it comes to keeping your working surface clear of masonry dust and debris. This is especially true of masonry projects that require breaking down some pre-existing materials first, given that that process will likely create a lot of debris.
Alignment is crucial in masonry projects, so you must have a full arsenal of alignment tools at your disposal. At a basic level, this means obtaining and keeping a mason’s square close at hand.
These flat plastic tools make it easy to determine if your corners are perfectly squared.
Meanwhile, your alignment toolset should also include a mason’s level. For the most part, these levels operate like a standard level, save for the shape and style of their enclosure.
You’ll also want to keep a plumb bob on hand to ensure that your walls are perfectly flush while you are in the process of erecting them.
Brick JointerSome consider jointers to be a special kind of trowel. But in reality, this hand tool is indispensable for any good mason.
This slightly concave tool allows a mason to scoop out the excess mortar between bricks, which creates the mortar joints seen between the bricks after the mortar dries. As such, a jointer is a necessary tool for masons who want their projects to turn out as uniform as they are sturdy.
Must-Have Masonry Power Tools
Now that you know about the basic hand tools, let’s take a look at the must-have power tools to help you with masonry jobs.
Masonry SawWhen it comes to cutting through bricks, stones, and more, nothing else compares to an electric masonry power saw.
While these circular saws don’t typically cut through larger masonry materials, they make it increasingly easy to achieve a clean break using a chisel.
These saws are also exceptionally able to withstand the heat and friction of stone-cutting due to their diamond-tipped blade teeth.
Shop VacWhile this may not be a power tool in the traditional sense, a shop-vac will ensure that your working area is both safe and clean. Masonry dust is a considerable hazard on many job sites, so it is always worth keeping a shop-vac available for sucking up excess debris on the ground.
A shop-vac can additionally be used to draw up excess water that may run off during the process of cooling your cutting-based power tools.
Rotary Hammer DrillTechnically, any power drill available to you can be used as a concrete drill. All you need to do is obtain a set of masonry drill bits that make boring concrete safe and efficient.
However, you can also choose to pick up a purpose-built concrete drill. These units typically feature a stronger motor and better leverage options to deal with the heavy resistance faced when boring into the material.
Laser LevelManual levels can often do the day-to-day work of keeping your masonry projects aligned. However, when absolute precision is necessary over the breadth of a large project, only a laser level can promise perfect results.
As long as they are properly calibrated, these compact levels can output precise guides that never waiver from a flush alignment. Laser levels do come in several forms, though (including multi-line and tripod-mounted models), so be sure to figure out which kind your project needs before buying one.
Masonry Materials You Should Buy
This entire collection of masonry materials does not need to be purchased before starting your masonry projects. Instead, buy masonry materials on an as-needed basis shortly before starting your project. Materials stored for a long time are subject to moisture damage. When moisture penetrates bags of veneer mortar, conventional mortar, grout, or concrete, the materials will harden, become useless, and need to be disposed of.
Veneer mortar is a specialized type of mortar enriched with polymers to help the veneer masonry units stick to vertical surfaces. As this mortar can be quite expensive, use this material only for manufactured veneer stones and be sure to mix it sparingly in small batches.
Portland cement is a mixture of lime, silica, alumina, iron, and gypsum. Portland cement comes in 50 and 100-pound bags.
Aggregate is a material composed of sand or sometimes gravel that fills out and forms the bulk of concrete.
Mortar is the mixture used to get the masonry units to stick together.
Grout is a mixture of Portland cement and some sand. Grout fills the seams between the masonry units.
Ready-mix concrete is a pre-made mixture of Portland cement, sand, and gravel that requires only water to harden and cure. This type of concrete is invaluable for setting fence posts, and deck supports.
Reinforcing bars, or rebar, are steel bars added and embedded throughout masonry to increase its strength. Rebar is used for larger projects like concrete sidewalks.
At first glance, this may feel like a lot of necessary tools for taking on a standard masonry project.
If you’re taking on a DIY project, for example, you may only need the hand tools listed above. However, if you’re going to commit to masonry work fully, you’ll want all 10 of the tools listed above within arm’s reach.
Beyond this, the only other materials you’ll need to get started are your masonry materials (such as stones or bricks) as well as some mortar to bind those materials together. These several tools will make that process much easier, so don’t skip out on a single one of them if you want to be a successful mason.
