Architectural Stairs: Where Function Meets Beautiful Design
The location of your stairs is a critical design decision that determines whether it becomes a stunning feature or a practical element tucked away. At MJS Construction Group, we have strong opinions about what makes a great staircase, born from years of experience designing homes that function beautifully.
We avoid U-shaped stairs whenever possible, finding them hard to navigate and challenging when moving furniture between floors. Instead, we prefer positioning stairs along dividing walls strategically set just off the first-floor retreat. This thoughtful placement allows natural light from retreat windows to cascade down the stairwell and into the corridor below.
Placing stairs on dividing walls also creates the perfect opportunity to incorporate skylights, bringing additional natural light flowing down to the ground floor. This approach transforms what could be a purely functional element into a light well that enhances the entire home.
Additionally, this stair positioning elegantly breaks up long corridors, preventing the tunnel-like effect that often occurs with side-positioned U-shaped stairs. The result is a more inviting, open feeling throughout your home.
While our design philosophy guides these recommendations, we ensure all clients have the freedom to choose their preferred stair type and finish, allowing for personalisation while benefiting from our architectural expertise.
