As someone who’s worked in the construction industry for over 35 years, I’ve seen firsthand how noise can be a huge problem in duplex homes.

Resilient channels, like MuteClips, are a game-changer for reducing noise transfer between floors and ceilings. 

They work by decoupling the drywall from the framing, preventing vibrations from travelling through the structure. Adding these channels during construction can make a noticeable difference in sound isolation.

Materials for Improved Noise Isolation

Using the right materials is essential for soundproofing success. Mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) is a fantastic option for blocking sound, and acoustic plasterboard offers additional mass to walls and ceilings. 

Combining these materials with acoustic insulation in cavities between studs and joists will provide a solid foundation for soundproofing.

When selecting materials for duplex soundproofing, you have many options. I’ve worked with various products over the years, and these are some of the most effective ones I recommend.

Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) and Its Effectiveness

Mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) is a heavy, dense material that adds mass to walls and ceilings, blocking sound transmission. It’s perfect for reducing airborne noise in duplex homes and is easy to install, either attached to walls or between drywall layers.

Acoustic Mineral Wool/Rockwool for Insulation

Mineral wool or rockwool is highly effective for absorbing sound within cavities. I’ve used it in many duplex projects, and it’s especially effective at reducing low-frequency noises, like the rumble of footsteps or washing machines.

Acoustic Plasterboard and Resilient Channels

When combined with resilient channels, acoustic plasterboard helps create a significant barrier against both airborne and impact noise. I recommend using it on shared walls and ceilings to maximise sound isolation.

Concrete walls are fantastic for sound isolation, but even if your duplex has concrete, there’s always room for improvement. Adding a layer of MLV or acoustic plasterboard will provide additional soundproofing, ensuring that your walls are truly noise-resistant.

To prevent noise from upstairs, focus on the flooring in the unit above. Installing MLV beneath the flooring or using a floating floor structure will help reduce the impact noise from footsteps.

I’ve worked on projects where retrofitting soundproofing was significantly more expensive than incorporating it during construction, mainly because of the labour costs involved in removing existing materials.

If you’re on a budget, DIY soundproofing can be a good option. However, for the best results, I highly recommend hiring professionals, especially for larger projects. Installing resilient channels, floating floors, or sealing flanking paths requires expertise, and mistakes can lead to ineffective soundproofing that needs to be fixed later.

Regulations and Standards for Duplex Soundproofing

Several regulations and standards govern sound insulation in duplex homes, ensuring that duplexes provide an acceptable level of noise control for residents.

NCC Specifications and Minimum Soundproofing Requirements

The National Construction Code (NCC) sets minimum standards for duplex soundproofing, including the requirement for walls between units to achieve an STC rating of at least 50. For impact noise, the IIC rating should be 50 for floors.
