Living in a duplex can be a dream—sharing a wall and floor with someone else can save money and offer a sense of community. But without proper duplex soundproofing services, the noise from your neighbours can keep you up at night or disrupt your peace during the day, quickly turning that dream into a nightmare.

In my experience, duplex soundproofing isn’t just a luxury-it’s a necessity. After dealing with thin walls and noisy floors in my own duplex, I learned the hard way how much of a difference proper soundproofing can make. 

Whether you’re building a duplex or moving into one, ensuring soundproof floors and walls can dramatically improve your living environment.

What Is Soundproofing and Why Does It Matter?

Soundproofing is the process of blocking or reducing the transmission of sound between spaces. In a duplex, this means stopping noise from travelling through shared walls, ceilings, and floors. 

Trust me, after hearing everything from my neighbours’ TV shows to their footsteps, I learned that good soundproofing creates privacy, enhances comfort, and improves overall well-being. Without it, you’ll feel like you’re living in a fishbowl.

The Different Types of Noise You Need to Address

Before you start soundproofing, you need to understand the types of noise you’re dealing with in a duplex setting:

  • Airborne Noise: Think voices, music, or TV sounds-anything that travels through the air.
  • Structure-borne Noise (Impact Noise): This comes from vibrations like footsteps or dropped objects, and it’s a big issue in duplexes. If you’ve ever heard the thud of a dropped chair upstairs, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
  • Flanking Noise: This tricky noise can bypass the main barriers in your home, travelling through cracks or indirect routes, like wall cavities or spaces between floorboards. It’s one of the sneakiest types of sound, often making it harder to find and block.

By understanding these types of noise, you can focus on the right soundproofing techniques for each.

How to Soundproof Walls in a Duplex: Proven Methods

Shared walls are the most common culprit for noise problems in duplexes. Luckily, there are several proven techniques that can help you tackle the issue head-on.

Using Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) for Superior Sound Blocking

One of the most effective materials I’ve used for soundproofing duplex walls is Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV). It’s a heavy, dense material that blocks airborne noise effectively. 

MLV is easy to apply to existing walls without needing a major overhaul. You can hang it directly on the drywall or laminate it under new layers of drywall for added soundproofing.

In my duplex, I opted to add MLV behind the drywall. It made a significant difference by reducing the noise from conversations and music next door. It’s one of those simple solutions that can pack a real punch when used correctly.

Decoupling: A Critical Technique for Reducing Noise

If you really want to take things to the next level, consider decoupling. This technique breaks the physical connection between surfaces, preventing vibrations from travelling directly from one side of the wall to the other. It’s a game-changer.

For my duplex, I used Resilient Channels (RC). These flexible metal strips were attached to the studs before the drywall, helping to isolate the wall from the studs and reducing the amount of sound that passes through. 

It’s not the cheapest solution, but if you want to block both airborne and impact noise, this is the way to go.

If you’re working with a tighter budget, you can also use Isolation Clips. These clips are a little more expensive than RC, but they provide better decoupling, which means greater noise reduction. Trust me, it’s worth the extra investment.

Acoustic Panels and Insulation: Adding Extra Protection

I highly recommend adding acoustic insulation like Rockwool Safe ‘n Sound. This material is fire-resistant, sound-absorbing, and perfect for filling wall cavities. It blocks noise effectively and, when combined with decoupling, takes your soundproofing to the next level.

Additionally, acoustic panels or foam tiles can be used to treat the surface of the wall. These help absorb sound waves that would otherwise bounce around the room, increasing the clarity of sound in your space and reducing echoes. 

I installed a few in the living room of my duplex, and it made a huge difference to the overall sound quality of the space.

Floor Soundproofing Methods: How to Reduce Noise Between Duplex Floors

The floors of a duplex can be just as problematic as the walls when it comes to noise transmission. But with the right materials, you can reduce impact noise (footsteps, dropped objects) and airborne noise between floors.

Rubber Underlayment and Joist Gasket Tape for Footfall Control

If you’ve ever heard your upstairs neighbours walking around, you know how annoying impact noise can be. The solution I found most effective is installing rubber underlayment beneath the floor covering. It absorbs vibrations and prevents sound from travelling downwards.

Before laying the new flooring in my duplex, I applied Joist Gasket Tape to the floor joists. This closed-cell foam helps prevent sound vibrations from travelling through the floor structure and reduces noise from footfalls. For any duplex, this is a must-do step.

Mass Loaded Vinyl for Floors: Effective Solutions for Noise Insulation

Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) isn’t just for walls-it’s equally effective on floors. When I soundproofed my duplex floors, I laid down a layer of MLV directly on the subfloor, and it made a noticeable difference in reducing noise from above. 

You can then install your flooring as usual. It’s an excellent solution for both airborne and impact noise.

Adding a Second Layer of Subfloor for Improved Insulation

For added protection, install a second layer of subfloor over the existing one, using Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound between the layers. This compound acts like a shock absorber, helping to reduce both airborne and impact noise. It’s like giving your floors a double layer of protection-definitely worth the effort.

To soundproof both walls and floors in a duplex, there are several key materials you should consider using. Here’s a quick list of the essentials:

DIY Soundproofing Tips for Duplex Owners

For DIYers, start with easy fixes like adding MLV to your walls or installing rubber underlayment beneath your flooring. 

Sealing all gaps around doors and windows with acoustic caulk is also a simple but effective step that can make a big difference. Just remember, the more effort you put in, the better the result!

Soundproofing Between Duplex Floors: Essential Techniques for Effective Noise Control

When you live in a duplex, sound between floors is often the most noticeable and disruptive. This is especially true in multi-level buildings, where impact noise like footsteps or dropped objects can echo through the structure. 

After facing these issues in my duplex, I found that a few strategic measures could make a world of difference. Here’s how you can soundproof between your duplex floors.

Installing Rubber Underlayment for Impact Noise

Rubber underlayment is one of the most effective materials for reducing impact noise in duplexes. This material is specifically designed to absorb vibrations caused by footsteps or moving furniture. 

It’s perfect for laying beneath carpets, tiles, or hardwood flooring. In my experience, using high-quality rubber underlayment before installing finished flooring can cut down footfall noise significantly.

Benefits of Rubber Underlayment:

  • Reduces impact noise like footsteps, dropped objects, or pet movement.
  • Provides cushioning and comfort underfoot.
  • Helps prevent future floor squeaks.

Best application for duplex floors:

  1. Preparation: Remove old flooring and clean the subfloor.
  2. Installation: Roll out rubber underlayment, cutting to fit the floor. Use adhesive or double-sided tape for secure placement.
  3. Finish: Install your chosen finished floor (e.g., carpet, tile, or wood) on top of the underlayment.

Rubber underlayment works best when combined with soundproofing compound like Green Glue, which dampens vibrations further.

The Importance of Floor Insulation in Reducing Noise Transmission

Floor insulation is often overlooked but plays a vital role in preventing sound from travelling between duplex floors. 

Proper floor insulation, particularly in the joist cavities, can help absorb airborne sounds as well as impact noise. I noticed a significant reduction in noise after I added mineral wool insulation beneath the floors.

Why Insulate Floors?

  • Prevents sound from travelling through the floor structure.
  • Reduces airborne noise, such as music or conversation from below.
  • Improves thermal comfort by adding an extra layer of insulation.

Types of Insulation to Consider:

  • Mineral Wool (Rockwool): Highly effective for both sound and fire protection.
  • Fiberglass Insulation: Affordable and commonly used for noise control in floors.
  • Spray Foam Insulation: Provides an airtight seal, preventing sound leakage.

By insulating floors, you’re not just reducing noise-you’re improving the overall comfort and acoustics of your duplex.

The Role of Acoustical Caulk in Sealing Gaps and Cracks

One of the most overlooked elements in soundproofing a duplex is ensuring there are no gaps or cracks through which sound can leak. 

Even the smallest gap in the walls or floors can result in significant noise transmission. After soundproofing my duplex, I realised that acoustical caulk was one of the simplest yet most effective tools in blocking these sound leaks.

What Does Acoustical Caulk Do?

  • Seals gaps and cracks where sound can easily leak.
  • Works alongside soundproofing materials to maximise their effectiveness.
  • Stops sound from travelling through outlets, baseboards, and around doors or windows.

How to Use Acoustical Caulk:

  1. Identify Gaps: Check along walls, ceilings, floors, and around electrical outlets for any visible cracks or spaces.
  2. Apply Caulk: Using a caulking gun, apply a bead of acoustical caulk around the perimeter of windows, doors, baseboards, and electrical outlets.
  3. Smooth the Caulk: Use your finger or a tool to smooth the caulk into the gap, ensuring it fills completely.
  4. Allow Drying Time: Let the caulk cure as per manufacturer’s instructions before applying any further soundproofing materials.

Additional Tip: Be sure to use high-quality acoustical caulk rather than standard silicone, as it is specifically designed for noise control.

How to Address Soundproofing on Duplex Ceilings for Maximum Noise Reduction

The ceiling of a duplex can be a significant source of noise disturbance. Whether it’s footsteps from above or loud music, noise from the ceiling can travel into your space, especially if the floor is not properly soundproofed. 

During my experience, I found a combination of materials and techniques to be key in creating a quieter, more peaceful upstairs-downstairs environment.

Adding Resilient Channels to Decouple the Ceiling

Resilient channels are an excellent option for soundproofing duplex ceilings. They help decouple the ceiling from the structure, reducing the transmission of vibrations and sound. 

I used resilient channels along with acoustic insulation for my ceiling, which dramatically improved the sound isolation between floors.

How to Install Resilient Channels:

  1. Preparation: Remove any existing ceiling drywall and expose the framing.
  2. Install Channels: Attach the resilient channels to the ceiling joists. Ensure the channels run perpendicular to the direction of the ceiling drywall.
  3. Apply Insulation: Before reattaching the drywall, install Rockwool or fiberglass insulation between the joists.
  4. Reinstall Drywall: Screw drywall into the resilient channels, being careful not to make direct contact with the ceiling joists.

Why Use Resilient Channels?

  • They prevent vibrations from travelling through the ceiling structure.
  • They are highly effective for reducing both airborne and impact noise.
  • They can increase STC (Sound Transmission Class) ratings of the ceiling assembly by up to 10 points.

Using Double Layers of Drywall with Green Glue

A double layer of drywall with Green Glue is one of the best ways to improve soundproofing on ceilings. Green Glue acts as a damping compound that reduces sound transmission by converting vibrations into heat. After using this method in my duplex, I noticed a considerable difference in both impact and airborne noise from above.

Steps to Apply Double Drywall with Green Glue:

  1. First Layer: Install the first layer of drywall directly onto the ceiling, securing it with screws.
  2. Apply Green Glue: Apply Green Glue in a random pattern (approximately 2 tubes per 4×8 sheet) to the back of the second layer of drywall.
  3. Attach the Second Layer: Screw the second layer of drywall into place, ensuring it is perpendicular to the first layer to improve soundproofing efficiency.

This method not only reduces noise transmission but also offers fire resistance due to the added layers of drywall.

Importance of Sealing Perimeter Gaps Around Ceilings

Just like with walls and floors, sealing gaps around the ceiling is vital for optimal soundproofing. Even tiny openings can significantly compromise your soundproofing efforts. 

Acoustical caulk is an essential tool here to seal gaps between the drywall and other surfaces like windows, doors, and ceiling trim.

Soundproofing your duplex is a smart investment that enhances both comfort and privacy. By using the right materials and techniques, like MLV, Green Glue, and insulation, you can reduce noise from your neighbours and create a quieter, more peaceful living environment. 

Whether you’re dealing with impact noise from footsteps or airborne sounds from conversations and music, soundproofing methods are available to tackle both.
